There is a lot of pride that comes with becoming a new homeowner. Nothing feels better than having a place you call home. After all the waiting and negotiating, you now have the keys to your humble abode, and an empty canvas to create a wonderful personal space. You probably have gone through many design magazines for stylish ideas and have your own vision board for each room. If you are like many new homeowners, the ideas become less of a reality because of the cost of doing a fully-fledged top of the line design in your home. In most cases, if you have a starter home, your renovation bills has racked up another zero and you are tapped out. So how do you get the home you love without thinning your wallet? Here are a few great affordable ideas to get you started:

So you are working with borrowed furniture and empty rooms, don’t fret – Rome was not built in a day. Begin deciding on each function of each room. Some rooms will be used more than others and the focus should begin on those rooms that will be used more frequently. Don’t start by designing the entire home, this will overwhelm you. Begin with one room at a time.

Color

Designate a color scheme that works cohesively around the house. Try to stick to one main color and find shades and tone gradients from that main color. Keep in mind that using a different color for each room could blow your budget, especially if you are painting your walls. Using neutral favorites like beiges, pastels and grays are always a safe bet and work well with any type of color accent. Seasonal colors will be more expensive than classic colors like the above mentioned.

Furnish

If you have chosen to start with your bedroom, finalize your color scheme for the room and select furniture items that can work with your room. Visit thrift stores and second-hand shops for great deals on bed frames, drawers, lampshades and other unique accessories. Some items may need a little TLC. Grab some spray paint or cleaning liquid and clean and repaint the item back to life. Remember that all furniture items can be bought separately as not to overwhelm your wallet. Your furniture choices can add pops of color, small details and function to your room.

The devil is always in the details. The trick to a well-decorated area is to pay attention to every aspect of each room. Do not neglect your windows. Whether you have wall to floor windows or not, you can still make it stylish. Use Roman shades for smaller windows with graphic patterns and bold prints. Standard curtains can be pricey. If you have bay windows or French doors, you can consider shower curtains as an inexpensive way to add detail to your windows. Look at these ideas for inspiration.
