Michelle loves her homegrown potatoes and Oprah raves about her gorgeous greens. Meanwhile, you’ve been eating canned corn as long as you can remember.  Every modern women needs two things; a library and garden. But for us city gals, a garden can be hard to come by. Well no need to fear, Modern Domestic has a solution for you! You no longer need to choose between apartment living and a gorgeous garden. You can have both! Test out your green thumb by creating this apartment-friendly DIY garden made from cinder blocks.

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Six 12 inch two hole cinder blocks ** WARNING** cinder blocks are VERY heavy, get a pal to help you carry and place these.
  • One large bag of potting soil (be sure to get enough to fill you cinder block holes)
  • Six small potted plants
  • Optional paint for decorating

First, arrange your cinder blocks by placing them in a fitting corner of your patio or balcony. Make sure the area is exposed to lots of sunlight. Start by placing three cinder blocks in an L shape. Next, place two more cinder blocks on top, pyramid style, to create another L shape. Finally, place the last remaining cinder on top. If you’d like to add a little pop to your garden, paint the exposed walls with bright colors and patterns of your choice. Allow the paint to dry overnight.

Begin to fill the open cinder block cores about half-way with soil. Be sure to leave enough soil space to add in your plants. Now, remove your plants from their original container and pot your plants in the openings. Fill any extra space with your remaining soil. Now, simply water your plants, sit back, and watch your garden grow! Martha Stewart would be so proud!
