Whoever said that clothes and shoes have to be stored in ordinary closets and drawers? Well, that may have been what they were created for, but we must have alternatives when our closets are well over capacity and drawers can barely close… or if we are just looking for funky alternatives. Being that most women never stop shopping, it is critical that we create and maximize our space. Not just any space, but creative alternatives that will enhance the ambiance of any room in our homes/apartments.

Free Standing Wardrobes

Since we’ve clarified that closets are not enough storage space, consider purchasing or building a free-standing wardrobe. Free standing wardrobes are perfect additions to any bedroom because of the various finishes and sizes. Use your wardrobe to display your show-stopping pieces, outfits for the work-week, or daily must-haves. Be creative with your wardrobe, not only does it have to be free standing, but wardrobes can be hung from walls and ceilings and built in.

Shoes:

In a “well organized” closet, shoes fit in perfectly with the amount of space you have. When displaying shoes, you must first decide if you plan on keeping them in boxes. If so, here are some cool ideas to consider:

  • Use Photos- photograph the shoe, and place it on the face of the shoe box.
  • Use Personal boxes- Recycle the cardboard boxes for personal boxes that are similar in size, like plastic bins etc. Plastic bins also come in handy because you can see what shoes are being stored.

Box-less Options:

  • Shelves- freestanding or floating shelves are a must. They give your space a sleek line for your shoes to be properly displayed.
  • Multi-purpose seating- Seats with a removable tops are perfect for shoe storage. Try a bench or a trunk for storing your shoes. The best part about it is you get a dual functioning space; a seat and storage.

One fact of life is … we do not all have walk-in closets!

However, we do have space in other rooms besides our bedrooms. Take this picture (above) for example. This exemplifies creativity. This is the mindset we must have to maximize on our space limitations; like using a spare bedroom for your walk-in closet. For you to achieve effective alternative options, start by adding these items to your spare bedroom turned closet:

  • Built-in shelving
  • Clothing Racks
  • A Storage Island
  • An Oversized Mirror
  • Seating
  • Consider resources; who can help you achieve this?

Jewelry:

Isn’t this such a challenge, finding a place to store jewelry. The upside is that there are a lot of jewelry display options to choose from. When it comes to jewelry, the best ideas are simple DIY projects. Here are some quick and fun DIY options:

  1. Wine bottles- Use the neck for displaying bracelets and watches
  2. Tea Cups or bowls- Perfect for rings and studs
  3. Push pin Boards- Ideal for necklaces

Now that you have a number of ideas for secondary storage options, all of your beautiful pieces can now be properly stored and displayed outside the closet.

Remember, think outside of the box!
