So there’s a proper way to hang pictures? Absolutely! You don’t want your picture to be crooked, unsecure, or unleveled. Your desire should be to have awesome décor in your home and this includes your walls. Here are a few tips that I’ve learned along the way that will help you in your picture hanging process.

Materials

  • Hammer
  • Stud Finder
  • Nails or Picture Hangers
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Leveler
  • Pictures

Start by gathering all of the pictures you want to hang. You might have a theme like family photos or a color theme. It helps if you have all of the pictures you want to hang already. Once you have gathered all of your pictures together, arrange them. Have an idea of where you want to go. If you have a friend, ask that friend to come by and hold the picture in place to see if that is where you want it to go.

It is important to make sure that your pictures are centered. A good way to do this is to use a leveler. You can place the leveler underneath the picture and you will know that the picture is centered when the little bubble appears in the middle. Once this happens, take a pencil and make a line above and below the photo so that you know exactly where to put it when it is time to hang. Pencils are great to use because you can always go back and erase the lead marks.

Sometimes people begin hammering nails into the wall to put the picture up and then it comes crashing down. Why does that happen? It’s possible the picture may be too heavy and you should consider hanging your picture on a stud. Studs are vertical building frames and can handle the heaviness of any picture. To locate them, go to your local home improvement store and purchase an electric stud finder at a very low cost. This device will help you locate the studs in the wall so that you can hammer your nail directly into the stud before hanging your picture, which is best for hanging heavier items.

Now that you have gathered your pictures together, arranged them, and located the studs in the wall, now it’s time to break out the hammer and the nails. You can use nails or you can purchase “picture hangers,” which are little hooks with holes. The hooks protrude outward so that you can hang the picture onto the hooks. Either way is fine because you will still have to use nails at some point. Now that you have everything you need and proper directions, your new hung pictures should look rather fabulous!
