There’s nothing like finding a good buy at the thrift store. Don’t get nervous if you find something that might be dated or a little nicked and damaged, because you can always revamp it. Walking into a thrift store can be nerve racking and exciting at the same time. Just know that here at Modern Domestic we have your back with fabulous ideas on how to turn drab into fab!

A great idea we found is painting over your fabric chairs with chalk paint instead of going through the whole mess of reupholstering the chair. Genius! This is a sure shot quick fix and all you need is a steady hand. We’re so excited to share this idea with you. Just think … each time you think about changing your color scheme, just re-apply a different color. Yes ma’am!

 Things you will need:

Chalk paint
Sand paper
Paint brush
Water bottle
Soft wax
Odorless mineral spirits
Wax brush

First, you will need to mist down the chair with water. This allows the fabric not to soak up too much of the paint and allow it to spread evenly. Apply three coats with drying time in between. After complete drying, you will need to lightly sand the paint so that the texture of the fabric shows through. Now, you should have a 50/50 mix of the wax and the odorless mineral oil, using the wax brush to apply. You definitely need this to dry completely, so allow up to three weeks for final drying. This way the paint won’t crack or leave residue on clothing after sitting on it.
