The kitchen is the most expensive room to renovate and if you don’t have the budget or the patience to work with a contractor, you’re pretty much out of options. However, we’ve put together some thrifty, quick fixes to give your kitchen a face lift.
Brighten the room.
If your kitchen has limited natural and artificial light, manipulate the space with paint. Use pastels and white color schemes. This dramatically brightens the walls and cabinets. Use the white paint on your walls or larger surfaces, while the cabinets can be painted with a pastel color. You can find your paints at any hardware store for about $8 and up. Grab some friends, roll up your sleeves and have a paint party!
Back splash.
Back splashes add beautiful details to your kitchen. It’s an inexpensive way to bring glam to a dull kitchen. Not to mention, they are simple to install and easy to find. Back splash tiles can be found online and in many hardware stores. Pick out designs that will be classic and add value to your kitchen. Prices are start at about $20.
Details.
The devil is in the details. Something as small as a cupboard door handle changes the look of a room. Shop around for the perfect handles or other small detailed “accessories” that compliment the overall decor and design scheme on your kitchen space. You can find plenty of designs online or at a furniture resale store; all you’ll need is a few nails and a drill.
DIY island.
If having an island in your kitchen has always been a dream, but you couldn’t afford it – consider creating one. Make your way to your local antique or furniture resale store and find a wooden table that will fit in your kitchen. Sand it down, add a new coat of paint and voila! You have an island. A major perk; if you decide to move – you can take it with you.
