You just purchased a home and you’re so excited about fixing it up and changing a few things around. It was a long buying process and you are ready for your house to feel like a home. But before you start doing anything, there are four things you need to know before renovating.

Short/Long Term: Decide how long you will be staying at your new residence and figure out your short/long term goals for your renovations. Long term decisions include adding rooms and making your space bigger for your growing family. Short term decisions include renovating your kitchen, bathroom, or basement; making changes to significant parts of the house can help when it’s time to sell it.

Budget: Depending on how big or small your project will be, determine how much money you’ll have spend. Once you settle on a price, stick to it and try not to go over. Keep in mind that things may happen while renovating, so set aside extra money for those mishaps. You may have to move out during the renovations. Also, look out for deals at your local Home Depot or Lowes, you may find some great things for a great price.

Contractors: Choosing a contractor will be the hardest part in this process. Putting the trust in someone to handle your house can be so frightening. Friends or family are your best referrals. They usually know of someone or heard of someone that can get the job done from the people they know. If you can’t get any referrals, try using services like Angie’s List. Angie’s List is a good place to find contractors because you have people giving their opinions and experiences. Also speak with more than one contractor. You want the contractor to take on your vision, give you honest feedback on what may or may not work in the space and provide you with alternatives.

Pay Attention to Detail: Now that everything is in order, it’s time to get to the fun stuff; picking out your color scheme and accessories. When picking out your paint, you want colors that flow well from room to room and will accentuate your wall and floor coverings. Also, choose colors that will brighten up small spaces and warm-up a dull area. Don’t be afraid to choose bold colors or accent one wall if you are a little skittish about doing the whole room. Mix and match finishes and color patterns. Spend time picking out accessories, too!

Renovating your home can be a headache, but it will all be worth it when your vision comes to life!
